If time allows, spend a night on a houseboat too. Waking up with a cup of tea on the water is worth it.
Best time: Early morning (6-8 AM) for the floating market, or evening for a sunset shikara ride.
Say Gulmarg and most people immediately think of snow — and rightly so. The Gondola ride here is one of the highest cable car rides in the world, taking you straight up to Apharwat Peak. It’s a well-known skiing destination in winter, but the meadows are just as beautiful in summer.
Best time: December-February for snow, April-June for green meadows.
3. Pahalgam
If you’re looking for a bit of peace without the crowds, Pahalgam is a great pick. Sitting by the Lidder River, or exploring Betaab Valley and Aru Valley nearby, makes it perfect for slow travel. A lot of Bollywood films have been shot here too, so several corners might look familiar.
Best time: March to October, when the weather is at its most pleasant.
4. Sonmarg
Sonmarg literally means “Meadow of Gold.” It sees fewer crowds compared to Gulmarg and Pahalgam, which makes it a nice quieter option. A popular activity here is trekking to Thajiwas Glacier, or taking a pony ride up to it.

5. Mughal Gardens, Srinagar
Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi are all located close to Dal Lake. Terraced lawns, fountains, and Chinar trees make this a treat for anyone who enjoys photography. If you’re visiting in April, don’t miss the Tulip Garden either — it’s the largest tulip garden in Asia.
Best time: April for tulip season, September-October for autumn colours.
6. Betaab Valley
A short distance from Pahalgam, this valley is known for its dense pine forests and the Lidder river running through it. It’s named after the Bollywood film “Betaab,” which was shot here. It’s a popular picnic spot for families and groups.
Best time: April to June, though it looks good post-monsoon as well.
7. Aru Valley
Just beyond Betaab Valley, Aru Valley is the starting point for the trek to Kolahoi Glacier. Whether you’re into adventure or just want to spend time in peaceful green meadows, this place offers both.

8. Doodhpathri
The name means “Valley of Milk,” because the grass here is such a light, milky green that it almost glows. It’s still a bit of a hidden gem and hasn’t turned overly commercial yet, so it’s a good pick if you want to avoid the crowds.

9. Yusmarg
About a 2-hour drive from Srinagar, Yusmarg is known for its rolling meadows and pine forests. It works well as a day trip — horse riding and relaxing by the nearby Doodh Ganga river are the main draws here.

10. Shankaracharya Temple, Srinagar
If you have time on your last day, visit the Shankaracharya Temple. It sits on Srinagar’s highest point, giving you a panoramic view of the entire Dal Lake and the city below. It looks even better around sunset.
