Quick answer: For most travellers, the best time to visit Darjeeling in 2027 is mid-October to November and March to April. Late autumn is the driest and sunniest stretch of the year, so it gives you the best chance of seeing Kanchenjunga. Spring is warmer and brings the first tea harvest and blooming rhododendrons on nearby treks. The monsoon months, June to September, bring most of the year’s rain and frequent landslide disruption.
The “best” month depends on what you want most: clear mountain views, mild weather, fewer people, or a lower budget. This guide to the best time to visit Darjeeling uses India Meteorological Department (IMD) climate averages, so you can see the trade-offs. It also adds a 2027 calendar of the holiday and festival dates that change crowds and hotel prices.
Quick pick: which month for what?
| If you want… | Best choice in 2027 | Why |

| Tea gardens in action | Mar–Jun and Oct–Nov | Harvests run roughly Mar–Apr (first flush), May–Jun (second flush) and Oct–Nov (autumn), with winter dormant |
| Rhododendrons and trekking | Late Mar–May, Oct–Nov | Singalila ridge; see the closure note below |
| Fewer crowds, lower rates | Jan–Feb, mid-to-late Nov, monsoon weeks | Compare live quotes, since rates vary by date |

| Easiest to avoid | Puja week, late May–June, Jul–Aug | Crowds, price spikes or heavy rain |

What the numbers tell you: April and May are popular, but they are not the clearest months. May averages about 10 rainy days and fewer sunshine hours than November. If your priority is mountain views, November beats May. If you want warmer days and long walks, April is the better pick. Sunshine hours improve your odds of clear mornings but never guarantee them.
Best time to visit Darjeeling by season
Spring (March–May)
- Good for: Mild days with highs of about 16–19°C, the first tea harvest, and rhododendron blooms along the Singalila trek route.
- Watch for: Crowds build as school holidays begin. Summer school holidays through May and early June are one of two peak-demand windows. Showers and cloud increase through May.

Monsoon (June–September)
- Good for: Lush green hills and lower prices.
- Watch for: Mist that hides the mountains, and roads that can be blocked, since monsoon landslides regularly disrupt road and rail links. Singalila National Park is reported closed from mid-June to mid-September, so Sandakphu treks are off. Confirm dates with the West Bengal Forest Department.
- Best for: Flexible, budget-minded travellers who accept disruption risk.

Autumn (October–November)
- Good for: The driest, sunniest weather, the best chance of Kanchenjunga views, and autumn-flush tea.
- Watch for: September–November is one of Darjeeling’s two peak tourism seasons, and Durga Puja week is the busiest. Nights turn cold in November (about 6°C on average).

Winter (December–February)
- Good for: Crisp, dry days and quieter streets outside the Christmas–New Year window.
- Watch for: Mean overnight lows of 1.7–3.5°C. Snow is rarely seen in Darjeeling town, though temperatures can fall below freezing. Sandakphu is more likely to be snow-covered in December–January. Tea bushes are dormant.

Our verdict on the best time to visit Darjeeling in 2027:
- Cleanest window: 10–28 October is after the Puja rush and before Diwali, but it is a “check the forecast” window, as the next section explains.
- Most reliable: November.
- Best spring pick: Late March to April. Avoid the Holi and Good Friday weekends if you can.
Crowds and prices
Darjeeling’s two peak seasons are September–November and April–May. Demand is highest in late May to early June and during Puja week. Rooms can fill weeks ahead and rates can double or more in those windows. A 2022 report on that year’s Puja season described hotel prices at two to three times normal levels. If you travel on fixed dates, book flights, trains and hotels as early as you can. Crowds and prices are a big part of choosing the best time to visit Darjeeling for your budget.
Monsoon and landslide planning
Early October is not automatically safe. On 4–5 October 2025, extreme rain triggered landslides across Darjeeling and Mirik, and hundreds of visitors who had come for Durga Puja holidays were stranded. More than 20 people died. Local reports later said the main towns were not badly affected, but connecting roads and bridges were damaged.
If you travel between June and mid-October:
- Keep 1–2 buffer days before any flight or train out of Bagdogra or NJP.
- Choose refundable or flexible bookings.
- Buy travel insurance.
- Check current road status and the IMD forecast 7–10 days before you leave.
- Have a backup route in mind. In 2025, the toy train was suspended and key routes were closed.
Practical notes
- Getting there: The nearest airport is Bagdogra, about 90 km away, and Siliguri is about 77 km by road. Check live road status before you travel.
- Toy train: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs on seasonal schedules. For the 2026 Puja season, it announced six extra joyride services from 1 October 2026. Check IRCTC for the 2027 timetable and fares.
- Altitude: At about 2,000 m, most people feel fine, but plan a slow first day.
- Packing: Layers all year. Add proper woollens from November to February and rain gear from April to October.

Best time to visit Darjeeling: frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Darjeeling in 2027?
November, if clear skies matter most: it is the driest and sunniest month in IMD data, with cold nights. April is the best spring pick for warmer days and tea.
Does it snow in Darjeeling?
Rarely in town, and not predictably. Snow is more likely around Sandakphu in December–January. Do not book on the promise of snow.
Is it worth visiting Darjeeling in the monsoon?
Only if you accept the trade-offs: mist instead of mountain views, possible road closures and no Singalila trek. The upsides are green hills and lower prices.
When can I see Kanchenjunga?
Most reliably in October–November, and often in March–April, early in the morning. The peak lies about 74 km north of Darjeeling. No month guarantees a clear sky.
Is Durga Puja a good time to go?
It has a festive atmosphere but is the busiest and most expensive period, and early October carries rain risk. If you go, book early and stay flexible.
How far ahead should I book for 2027?
For Puja week and May–June, start planning at least 2–3 months ahead. For other months, a few weeks ahead is usually enough.
